When your vehicle stalls, it’s a real cause for concern, particularly if you’re trying to navigate heavy traffic. Your first thought is likely, “Oh, no! Not now.” At Chris Murphy’s Automotive, we understand your cause for concern. If you’re experiencing car stalling–particularly if it’s happened more than once–be sure to address the problem. You’ll be protecting yourself from being stranded alone beside the road or immobile in the middle of a busy intersection. Further, you may be protecting your automobile from incurring additional problems (depending on what’s causing the stall). Our expert technicians are glad to diagnose the problem and correct the underlying issue, restoring your ability to travel with confidence.
While we’ll need to check your vehicle to determine the exact problem, we’re glad to share with you information on some of the most common causes of automobile stalls. Malfunctioning sensors are often to blame. These sensors detect various operating conditions (heat, fuel flow, oxygen, etc.) based on their specific type. They communicate the information to your car’s computer (ECU or engine control unit). If the computer receives misinformation, it can cause the car to shut down. If this has occurred, we can obtain a trouble code by connecting our diagnostic equipment to your auto’s OBD-II port. This will point us in the right direction and allow us to use our expertise to pinpoint and correct the exact problem. Also, a leak anywhere in the vacuum system that controls movement and mixture of fuel and air can lead to a stall. In this case, we identify and repair the leak. Your car’s fuel filter can become clogged, as well. This can cause your auto to starve for fuel at times, particularly when it’s in high demand. Likewise, the fuel pump itself can become clogged, especially if the filter has not been changed as recommended, or it can otherwise wear or blow a fuse that prevents it from getting the power it needs to operate.
If your vehicle stalls, or has had a few occurrences of stalling, don’t wait to get help. The expert team at Chris Murphy’s Automotive can help. We are always available to answer questions, inspect, and troubleshoot any of your car’s problems.
